Monday:
Monday was just another ordinary day of my life in Spain. Got up, had toast and juice and headed out for school. We had a long weekend in Granada so we were really tired on Monday. At school during our Grammar class all of the sudden we heard a flute playing a pretty tune really loudly outside and just as we were about to ask our teacher what it was she got all excited and told us to listen. We all sat there and were confused about why she was so excited, she then started to explain to us in Spanish what it was. She told us that the noise was an Afilador, which is an old tradition where a man that comes into a town or city on his bike and he plays the flute to let everyone know that he is there and his job is to sharpen their knives and scissors. There is a mechanism that is attached to the back of their bike that will sharpen them. We all thought this was the strangest thing and a really weird job, but it's also really interesting and cool. Here is a video of one:
It's so cool to find such strange traditions that are unheard of to our culture, but that are everyday things for another.
Tuesday:
Yesterday we got up, ate, and went to school. We got to school and our first hour teacher was teaching us some different vocabulary for traditional Spanish food so he decided to take us to a really cool fresh food market. I was amazed by all of the fresh food and how many different things they sold. It was like something from a movie. There were little markets inside of this big building that were selling different things at each. They had fish, meat, bread, candy, spices, fruit, vegetables, pickles, drinks, and so much more. That is one of the main things that I really wish we had at home. I would be able to cook so many more amazing things with such a variety of fresh food.
The fish were quite disturbing for me to see because a lot of them they were gutting right in front of you since Malaga is a coastal city and they bring in all of their own fresh fish.
I didn't have my camera with me, but this is what part of it looked like:
After school we came home, ate lunch and took a nap. At 6 last night we decided to go to the Picasso museum which was really cool. I was really excited to get to see a lot of the work in the museum because it was a lot of his private work that is not well known. Picasso grew up in Malaga so he decided when he died that he wanted to open a museum here. It was really awesome.
After the museum we walked around and looked at some shops for a while and then went to dinner. We have all really been craving some good Mexican food since the food here is nothing like Mexican food at all. Food here in Spain is quite bland and does not have much spice whatsoever. Lauren and I along with our friends Hanna and Amber found a cool Mexican restaurant by the beach and were really excited to go. We got there just as they were opening back up from their afternoon break/siesta. We all got chips with salsa, queso, and guacamole to share. I got a flauta and a taquito which were both incredibly amazing!
After dinner we were taking some pictures of each other at the table and our waiter came up and offered to take our picture for us. We thought that was very nice and let him take a few. He asked us if we wanted sombreros and we all thought he was joking, but then realized that he had pulled down a stack of sombreros and ponchos from a shelf behind the counter and was bringing them over for us, along with fake guns.. hahaha. So he came back to our table and gave each of us a hat, a gun, and a poncho and we had our own little photo shoot in the restaurant. It was hilarious and so much fun!
We had so much fun! After that we headed home to do homework and go to bed.
Today seemed to take forever at school. Our 5 hours of classes felt like it took 10 hours. After classes we headed right home to eat lunch. Today we had croquettas, crab cakes, and spaghetti con nata y jamon, which is spaghetti with a white alfredo like sauce with ham chunks in it. We love it!
Now we are resting until 5 when we will meet with the rest of our ISA group to go tour the Cathedral of Malaga. Every Wednesday they organize an event for us so it gives us something fun to go do.
This weekend we are going to Sevilla from Saturday to Sunday so we're really excited to get to travel again. I found out today that a plaza in Sevilla was used in a scene of the Star Wars movie Attack of the Clones. I am really excited about that, being the huge star wars that I am and that Ben is. I will take tons of pictures. Here is a picture of the scene from the movie:
I have to go get ready to go to the cathedral :)
Abrazos y Besos
